Guy Marquis

Orthopaedic Surgeon

Guy has extensive experience in knee, hip and shoulder arthroscopic, reconstructive and replacement surgery.

Having worked with Tasmania’s sporting and broader community for over 30 years he has also trained and mentored most of the orthopaedic surgeons currently practising in Hobart. During his time in practice Guy has gained a reputation for an easy communication style and thoughtful clinical assessment of his patients needs which he combines with meticulous surgical technique in order to gain the most favourable outcomes.

Guy was born and raised in Hobart and obtained his primary Medical Degree at UTAS. After completing his Orthopaedic training in Victoria, Guy travelled extensively to hone his surgical skills in emerging fields of arthroscopic shoulder and knee reconstructive surgery. He underwent postgraduate fellowship training with Keith Holt and Greg Witherow at Perth Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine in WA. He developed further skills in shoulder, hip and knee arthroplasty at the Nuffield Centre, Oxford UK, before undertaking a trauma fellowship in Germany.

In addition to his orthopaedic interests Guy continues to hold a deep fascination for sports of all kinds. His father, Peter “Trunky” Marquis, played Australian Rules Football for both Tasmanian and Victorian State teams, and is a member of the AFL Hall of Fame. Guy played senior football for Sandy Bay in the TFL, and Captained the Tasmanian Teal Cup team. His sister Andree represented Australia in Basketball. Guy’s own sporting participation continues to include cycling and climbing, which enables him to empathise with and understand the needs of both young and ‘not so young’, athletes through the various stages of their competitive lives.

His extensive training and dedicated care for the Tasmanian community has allowed Guy to introduce and continuously develop advanced techniques of arthroscopic surgery, joint reconstruction and arthroplasty for the Tasmanian community.

He currently carries out surgery for all lower limb joints including:

  • Hip Replacement via muscle sparing Direct Anterior Approaches (DAA)

  • Total and Partial Knee Replacement using Robotic Systems (ROSA) to assist surgical accuracy and minimise operative trauma, aiding rapid recovery and enhancing joint longevity.

  • Joint preserving arthroscopic and open surgery of the knee for traumatic, degenerative and patellofemoral disorders.

  • Knee Ligament reconstruction surgery of the cruciate and collateral ligaments.

In addition, Guy has extensive experience and postgraduate training in shoulder surgery including:

  • Arthroscopic and Open rotator cuff repair techniques

Guy also continues to provide surgical care for fractures and traumatic conditions.
